As reported by ESPN and confirmed by WWE, World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins suffered a torn ACL, MCL and meniscus during his match at the WWE live event on Wednesday in Dublin, Ireland. The injury will reportedly sideline Rollins for 6-9 months and likely knocks him out of the WrestleMania 32 picture.
Rollins has been booked as the company’s biggest ‘heel’ (villain) for well over a year, cemented by his cashing in of his ‘Money In the Bank’ contract back at WrestleMania 31 and has carried the title up until today’s announcement that he has vacated the championship.
As WWE announced, the title will be on the line at Survivor Series during a tournament, one that will likely be laid out as soon as Monday’s edition of RAW.
But the impact of Rollins’ goes far beyond the championship tournament, beyond Survivor Series and beyond the beginning of 2016. It actually impacts WrestleMania 32 and could also potentially impact a possible Undertaker vs. Sting match at WWE’s banner event.
According to my source, and as I have previously reported, WWE has been subtly building towards an iconic showdown between the Undertaker and Sting at WrestleMania 32, a dream match that fans have clamored for for over a decade, and the seeds were likely to be planted at Survivor Series. This would all hinge on the health of Sting.
But Rollins’ injury could put an interesting twist on the plans for the Undertaker, who is celebrating his 25th anniversary with the company at Survivor Series.
My source informed me that one potential idea for the ‘main event’ World Heavyweight Championship match that has been discussed would be a triple threat match between Rollins, Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose. There had been recent talks of turning Ambrose heel, but those apparently have been temporarily put on hold.
