It was announced on Raw that WWE will be bringing back the Elimination Chamber for a three hour event on May 31 that will be exclusive to WWE Network. The event will take place in Corpus Christi, Texas, which originally had a live event scheduled for that night. The event will only take place on WWE Network and it won’t be on traditional PPV providers.
What was interesting about the announcement is that it was just done by Michael Cole sitting at the announce table. Triple H was on Raw, so why not have him do it? Maybe they thought that it would hurt Payback since that is Sunday and WWE wants to keep the focus on that.
According to PWInsider, WWE made the decision to do Elimination Chamber within the last few days. Apparently it’s tough to get the Chamber into some arenas, but Corpus Christi has an arena where they can make it work. Since WWE has a free month of WWE Network for new subscribers, they wanted to add another show to the lineup.
There wasn’t that much information provided during Raw, but WWE.com had more info about it: “The anticipated, must-see WWE Elimination Chamber event will emanate from Corpus Christi, Texas, where the WWE Tag Team Championships and the newly vacant Intercontinental Championship will be defended inside the infamous structure. Plus, U.S. Champion John Cena will compete and the WWE World Heavyweight Title will be defended, all live on WWE Network.”
That’s a very interesting bit of info because we have never seen the Tag Team Titles defended inside the Elimination Chamber. Will the rules be that six teams are in the match and two guys are in the four pods to start while the other two teams are in the ring? Perhaps it would just be three teams so that they could keep it at six guys. Six teams might be hard to do although they have The New Day, Kidd/Cesaro, Harper/Rowan are back together, Prime Time Players, Los Matadores and The Ascension. Sandow and Axel are there as well.
Regarding the IC Title, it sounds like WWE will put six superstars in the match to compete for the vacant title. Good idea. Some likely candidates are King Barrett, Neville, Sheamus and Dolph Ziggler. The Miz is likely going to be back by then (he’s been away filming a movie) so he can be involved as well.
Judging from that information on WWE.com, it appears as though the WWE Title match will not be inside the Elimination Chamber although it’s certainly possible. Since Rollins is currently in a feud leading to a Fatal Fourway match, they could easily add Big Show and Kane to the mix to make it six guys.
The information from WWE.com also suggests John Cena might just compete in a US Title match without being in a Chamber match. Cena’s scheduled for a live event that day in Greenville, South Carolina that starts at 1pm, so he could do that show and get to Texas for the Elimination Chamber show that night.
If they were to have three or four Chamber matches then it would be similar to TNA’s Lockdown event where they have the whole show full of cage matches.
May is a loaded month for WWE in terms of major shows with Payback on May 17, NXT Takeover on May 20 and now Elimination Chamber on May 31.
